American’s Don’t Take Vacations

We can’t blame it on the crashing economy, the rising gas prices, and expensive air travel and hotel rooms. Even before the economy took a nosedive, Americans were reluctant to take a vacation.

A recent study shows Americans only 57% of American workers take vacations, using their accrued time off. In contrast, 71% of Europeans vacation.

In most cases, Americans know taking a vacation is not only expensive, but a vacation actually creates more work for them. We know returning to work after a week’s vacation means a whole extra week of work that needs to be done, and we’re the ones to do it.

We also fear taking a vacation means a co-worker who doesn’t vacation may be more likely to receive OUR promotion or pay raise because they ‘appear’ to be more diligent and hard working. THAT’s the American way.

Not only do Europeans take more vacations than their American counterparts, but the also receive MORE days off.  If Americans got more days off, we would most likely not even use them.
