American Audiences Getting Fatter?

Are American Theatergoers Getting Fatter?

Apparently so. Studies by a company called Theatre Projects Consultants say yes. A new report reveals that from 1900 to 1990 the theater seat width has increases from 19 to 21 inches and are increasing. Many theaters make even larger seats with padding, legroom, and of course, mega cup holders.

In just the last 20 years, seat size has expanded another inch., meaning exponential growth. It seems audience members are packing on the pounds and are uncomfortable in seats that were designed to fit people 100 years ago. This translates into higher ticket costs because a theater can hold fewer audience members now.

From 1960 to year 2000, the average weight of the adult American has shot up over 25 pounds. This is 15% (CDC- Centers for Disease Control). Sadly, the report indicates this is an American trend only. We’re getting fatter. And when some European countries enlarger their seats, it’s only because they follow American trendiness and not because their moviegoers need butter to slip into the seat.
